“Our health care system is the best in the country…”
Oh, really? I guess if I were to go to any country, their health care system would be the best in the country.
The problem is that he seems to have no sense of humor, no self-awareness, and no sense of irony. And he’s dumb.
Of course, lots [...]
I’ve been working with Laffy, SwingSet3, and some of my own code to check how we’re doing with the Sea Glass L&F. Here’s an example of Laffy’s tables:
Should the striping continue across the checkboxes? Nimbus doesn’t do that, but it is probably possible to do.
Comments?

I don’t really get it. The man is pretty moderate, especially when compared with European or Canadian politics. Or anywhere, really, that’s not a fascist state.
Yet there are people out there who think he’s a marxist, a socialist, and even a usurper. (Do these people understand about elections?)
Okay, I didn’t like George W. Bush. In [...]

Okay, so President Obama is recognized “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” Fine, but I think it’s too early. Having an attitude is easy. Getting things done is what counts.
I understand giving the prize to Wilson, who despite some antediluvian domestic policies (and being a racist) did create the [...]

I was reading Roger Cohen’s New York Times editorial this morning. It made some pretty good points. I particularly liked a point from Friedrich Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom, where he said:
“Where, as in the case of sickness and accident, neither the desire to avoid such calamities nor the efforts to overcome their consequences are [...]
Here’s a screen shot of Laffy running the Sea Glass L&F against my Ubuntu Linux desktop.
We may move to a more monochrome titlebar button scheme in the future, but right now we’re using a variation of Nimbus’s buttons.

Ray Kurzweil popularized the idea of a “Technological Singularity”, originally proposed by Vernor Vinge, based on ideas from I. J. Good, where the advances in technology and, particularly machine intelligence, will render the future unpredictable. The amusing thing to me is that they then go on to make predictions, usually having humans merging with artificial intelligences, [...]

I haven’t been reading as much sf, but I do like some of Charles Stross’s work, especially the first several books of the Merchant Princes series. It’s getting a bit soap opera-ish, and we’ll have to see what happens. I also liked Iron Sunrise quite a bit.
I don’t believe in Raymond Kurzweil’s Singularity concept, but [...]

In general, I like OS X and it’s my preferred platform. That said, I come from the VMS/Unix world originally, and from Windows more recently than that. I switched to using Macs in 2005.
That said, there are a few things I don’t like about the OS X user interface.
Lack of standard keyboard shortcuts.
Unless I’m doing [...]

I develop on a Mac, but I run Windows and Linux (Ubuntu/Gnome) and so it’s very important to me that our L&F look good on all of them. Otherwise I’d just find a way to blend Quaqua and MacWidgets and be done with it.
There are things I prefer about the Windows/GTK+ style of doing things. [...]
